What to see and do in Vallmoll

Vallmoll
Village
Vallmoll is a municipality in Alt Camp, in the province of Tarragona, at 161 metres above sea level; with close to 2,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth most populous municipality in the comarca. Its name comes from moll, the striped red mullet in Catalan, recalled by the three fish on its coat of arms. The castle, today a Cultural Asset of National Interest, was in the 15th century the centre of the Barony of Vallmoll, which also included the terms of Nulles, Bellavista, Casafort and Bràfim. Between 1719 and 1723 the village suffered an epidemic that caused 96 adult deaths and 90 child deaths, after which Philip V provided resources to build a hospital in the town. It retains the parish church of Santa María, in baroque and neoclassical style, and the hermitage of the Mare de Déu del Roser, from the 16th century.
Castle of Vallmoll
Monument
The castle of Vallmoll, a border castle that gives the municipality its name, stands beside the urban fabric and presides over the oldest cluster of houses in the upper part of the vila. Its origins go back to the 11th century, in the time of the Reconquest, when the castle and its territory belonged to the Castellvell and later to the Montcada; at the end of the 12th century a Hospitaller commandery was established there. It later passed to the Cardona and, from the 17th to the 19th century, to the counts of Peralada and the marquises of Bellpuig; in the 1940s it was acquired by the Vallmoll town council for 10,000 pesetas. It preserves the perimeter enclosure and part of the rectangular towers that flanked it, in an almost ruinous state and undergoing restoration.
Vallmoll Main Festival
Activity
The summer Festa Major of Vallmoll is celebrated on 15 August in honor of the Mare de Déu d'Agost; the municipality also celebrates a winter Festa Major on 20 January in honor of Sant Sebastià.
