What to see and do in Sant Llorenç de Morunys

Sant Llorenç de Morunys
Village
Sant Llorenç de Morunys is a mountain town in the comarca of the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, located north of Solsona, in the Lord valley, at the foot of the Port del Comte range. It includes an enclave between Guixers and Navès where the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Lord is located. It has 983 inhabitants. Its parish church, which occupies the building of the former monastery of Sant Llorenç de Morunys, is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It was once known as Sant Llorenç dels Piteus, after the medieval arrival of weavers from French Poitou, a trade that supported its economy alongside agriculture and livestock farming; today tourism, linked to the Port del Comte ski resort, is one of its driving forces. It preserves its walled enclosure.
Church of Sant Llorenç de Morunys
Monument
A church whose current building began in 1019, when by order of the bishop of Seu d'Urgell the Benedictine rule was established there, over an earlier temple already documented in 910. The old monastery, around which the so-called carrer de l'Església formed, became the parish church of Sant Llorenç de Morunys following the charter of Franquícies granted to the town on 14 May 1297. The temple preserves an organ and the chapel of the Mare de Déu dels Colls, with 16th- and 18th-century alterations.
Shrine of la Mare de Déu de Lord
Monument
Sanctuary documented since the year 989, situated on an isolated crag of the Mola de Lord at 1,150 m of altitude; a single-nave temple, 31 by 17 m, with side chapels between buttresses. The Carlists burned it in 1836; the current Neoclassical building was erected on the initiative of the industrialist Esteve Monegal and consecrated in 1870. It preserves the 13th-century Romanesque carving of the Mare de Déu de Lord, 1.10 m tall. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Walled Enclosure of Sant Llorenç de Morunys
Monument
Walled enclosure of Sant Llorenç de Morunys (Solsonès), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The walls, of irregular pentagonal plan, were built at the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th, following the charter of franchises granted in 1297 by the count of Cardona to the settlement formed next to the monastery of Sant Llorenç, founded in the 10th century; they were completed around 1400. They were flanked by between ten and eleven rectangular towers, of not very uniform plans. By the mid-19th century more than thirty varas of wall, the tower of the old monastery and the five access gates were still preserved; today only three of those arches remain, that of Canal, that of Vall Fred and that of Pietat.
