What to see and do in Odèn

Odèn
Village
Odèn is a mountain municipality in the Solsonès, in Lleida, located north-west of the comarca capital, on the border with the Alt Urgell, and made up of former districts and medieval quadras (land units) such as Odèn, which gives it its name, Cambrils and la Valldan. It is a very rugged territory, with altitudes ranging from the 2,400 metres of the Pedró dels Quatre Batlles to the 532 metres of la Valldan, dominated to the north-east by the Port del Comte range. In Cambrils, also known as Cambrils of the Pyrenees and today the settlement with the most inhabitants, stands the Casa de la Vila, the seat of the town council, next to the remains of the medieval castle; the municipality also preserves the castles of Odèn and Cambrils, on the foothills of the Cadí.
Castle of Odèn
Monument
A castle documented since 1073 as "castri Odenne", above the parish church of Santa Cecília d'Odèn, in the municipal term of Odèn. In 1116 Count Ermengol VI of Urgell pledged the castle's franchises to Mir Arnau for 200 sous, and the latter, together with his wife and children, donated the castle and its church to the monastery of Santa Maria de Solsona in 1134; in 1208 Ermengol VIII also bequeathed his masos to the same canonry. In 1375 it passed to the county of Cardona, and in 1563, by arrangement of its last owner, Jeroni Solà, it returned to the canonry of Solsona, which restored it in 1621. Attached to its south façade it preserves a chapel dedicated to Sant Jaume, with a rectangular nave and pointed vault, whose masonry points to the 11th or 12th century.
Castle of Cambrils
Monument
The castle of Cambrils crowns a hill of the Sierra del Bartoló Vell, above the river Fred, and used to dominate the village of Cambrils - known as Cambrils de los Pirineos to distinguish it from its namesake in Tarragona - and the road toward Oliana, in the municipal term of Odèn. Documented since 1039, when it belonged to the bishop of Urgell, it passed in 1159 to Count Ermengol VII of Urgell, with evidence of a period under the Templars. In 1375 it was incorporated into the new viscounty of Cardona, whose barony of Cambrils is mentioned between 1512 and 1831; in 1613 it was one of the places where the viscount exercised full civil and criminal jurisdiction. Of Romanesque origin, it is today in ruins and much altered; it is reached by a signposted path about five minutes from the L-401 road. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Odèn Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Odèn is celebrated on 15 August, dedicated to the Mare de Déu; the municipality also has other settlements with their own festivities, such as Valldan (second Sunday of May, Sant Salvador on 6 August) or Cambrils (Sant Isidre, Sant Jaume and the Festa Major del Roser).
Mountain range of el Verd
Nature
The Serra del Verd is a range of the Pre-Pyrenees located southwest of Gósol, straddling the comarques of Solsonès, on its southern slope, Alt Urgell, on the western part of the northern slope, and Berguedà, on the eastern part of that same slope. Its main ridge, running west-east, extends for just over six kilometres between the coll de la Moixa and the coll de Pradell. Declared a protected natural area, it presents gentle relief with exokarstic features, such as the dolines of the prat Navidal, and hosts black pine forests along with subalpine species of interest such as the capercaillie, which here is at the southern limit of its range.
