What to see and do in la Coma i la Pedra

La Coma i la Pedra
Village
La Coma i la Pedra is a mountain municipality in the comarca of the Solsonès, the northernmost one, on the border with the Alt Urgell and the Berguedà, the gateway to the Port del Comte ski resort, which gives its name to one of its settlements along with La Coma, the municipal capital, and La Pedra. The latter is the oldest documented settlement: the consecration of its parish church, around the mid-9th century, was carried out by the bishop of Urgell Guisad I, and a document from 962 already mentions the castle of la Pedra, today preserved next to the church of Sant Andreu del Pujol del Racó. The municipality, hemmed in between the Port del Comte massif and the Serra del Verd, runs from the 2383 metres of the Pedró dels Quatre Batlles to the 850 metres where the Cardener river leaves the municipality. It has 277 inhabitants.
Castle of la Pedra
Monument
Of the castle, cited in a document from 962 as "Castro Petra fulgenti" and again in 1375 when it passed to the new county of Cardona, only stone walls remain today: the reconstruction of its plan suggests a building about 18 m long by 7 m wide, with walls 80 cm thick. In 1445 the municipalities of the castles of Pedra, Sisquer, and Castelltort contributed to the wedding of the heir of the House of Cardona. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Tower of la Vila
Monument
The Torre de la Vila is a fortified Gothic house in the municipality of la Coma i la Pedra, in the Solsonès, included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It stands among the pastures of the southern slope of the Roques del Minguell; it is reached on foot, over 1.7 kilometres, along a track closed to traffic that branches off the LV-4012 road. A former turris or fortified farmhouse of the 12th-13th centuries, it has a ground floor for livestock and three storeys used as dwelling, hayloft and granary. Its ruins occupy the site of the so-called Torre dels Moros, close to a manor house that belonged to the monastery of Sant Llorenç de Morunys. It is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Port del Comte
Nature
Port del Comte is a ski resort in central Catalonia, in the massif of the same name, within the municipality of la Coma i la Pedra (Solsonès), about 150 kilometres from Barcelona; it opened in 1973 and its slopes, surrounded by a large forest of black pine, run between 1,730 and 2,290 metres in altitude. It has about 50 kilometres of skiable terrain spread over 36 slopes of all levels, organised into three sectors, the main one being El Querol, and 256 artificial snow cannons. It has 16 lift installations, including chairlifts, drag lifts and moving carpets, with capacity for more than 16,000 people an hour. Besides skiing and snowboarding, in winter it offers other activities such as sledging and snowshoe walks.
