What to see and do in Guixers

Guixers
Village
Guixers is a mountain municipality in the north of the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, located east of Sant Llorenç de Morunys and in the area where the Cardener river rises. It has 125 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread across entities scattered in farmhouses, such as Castelltort, Sisquer or Vilamantells, which once had their own town councils. It lives off livestock farming, agriculture, forestry, rural tourism and some gypsum quarries, and has 44 natural springs. It preserves the Romanesque hermitages of Sant Serni del Grau and Santa Creu d'Ollers, from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the ruins of the castle of Sisquer, documented in 1270, in addition to the castle of Castelltort. The GR-1 long-distance trail passes through the municipality.
Castle of Castelltort
Monument
Castelltort is one of the seven population entities of the municipality of Guixers, in the Solsonès, located in the south of the municipal term. Like the other entities of Guixers, its origin goes back to the old ecclesiastical division into parishes; that of Sant Climent de Castelltort still retains that category. Formerly the parish stood beside the castle of the same name, on the slope of a hill facing the present-day parish, on the other side of the Llosa del Cavall reservoir, the highest of the three that make up the Aiguadevalls range. Of the 11th-century castle there remain today wall remains of two enclosures and of the old Romanesque church of Sant Climent, accessible only when the reservoir's water level drops enough to use the old access path. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Castle of Sisquer
Monument
A "termenat" castle of the 10th century, documented as "Siscano" in the Urgell capbreu of 948 and as "Sischer" in the consecration act of its cathedral; the place-name element quer refers to a site already inhabited in Iberian times. In 1040 the consecration act of the monastery of Sant Sadurní de Tavèrnoles records that the church of Sisquer was dependent on that Benedictine house. Around 1200 the territory, previously belonging to the count of Urgell, passed to the viscounty of Cardona, and in 1375 it came under the new county of Peter the Ceremonious; in the 17th century it was the batllia of Morunys. It must have stood on the hill facing the present-day parish church, a small space, perhaps only for a defensive tower, from which the basin of the Aigua de Valls is dominated. Today only one stone wall survives, damaged by the roots of a tree.
Tower of la Corriu
Monument
A fortified house documented since the year 839, when the site appears in the consecration act of the Seu d'Urgell cathedral as illa Currize, in the municipal term of Guixers, east of the settlement of la Corriu and at the foot of the cliff of l'Espluga. The original construction, probably the residence of a lord or a well-off peasant around the 13th century, was abandoned after the late medieval demographic crisis and was reused in the 18th century to build the present-day masia, three storeys high with walls a metre thick of well-cut ashlar. Of the medieval building, which must have exceeded ten metres in height, only the south and west walls survive, at the southwest corner of the modern building; a cemetery was also found beside the tower. Declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
