What to see and do in Castellar del Riu

Castellar del Riu
Village
Castellar del Riu is a small rural municipality of 151 inhabitants (2025) at 1,234 metres above sea level and 33.34 km², with its administrative seat in the settlement of Espinalbet; between 1842 and 1857 it incorporated several districts, including Cofort and Espinalbet itself, whose castle gives its name to one of the sister entries. It lives from dry-land farming, livestock and the Rasos de Peguera ski resort, and preserves the church of Sant Llorenç dels Porxos and the Pi de les Tres Branques, a hundred-year-old pine tree 28 metres tall and 6 in circumference. Every year the Aplec del Pi de les Tres Branques is held in its honour, a pilgrimage begun in 1904, suppressed in 1924 by the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and restored in 1980.
Castle of Espinalbet
Monument
Of the castle of Espinalbet only a few courses survive of what was a square-plan building, raised directly on the rock; it was probably a defensive tower controlling the Castellar del Riu sector, although it never attained the rank of a frontier castle. No remains of walls survive, since the stone was reused for neighbouring farmhouses and the rectory of Sant Vicenç, but the remains of an access stairway climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the valley do survive. Records of the castle are linked to the viscountal family of the Berguedà, and it is documented from 1187, when it appears in the will of the troubadour Guillem de Berguedà, who left it to his brother Berenguer.
