What to see and do in Organyà

Organyà
Village
Organyà is a municipality in the Alt Urgell, in Lleida, crossed by the River Segre, with 853 inhabitants (INE 2025). It belonged to the priory of Organyà, founded in 1090 by Bernat Guillem, and later to the viscounty of Castellbò; from that priory remains the collegiate church of Saint Mary, Romanesque and with three naves, from 981-1010. In 1904 the historian Joaquim Miret i Sans found in the rectory the Homilies of Organyà, six sermons that are the oldest known prose in Catalan, from the late 12th or early 13th century; the manuscript is kept in the Library of Catalonia, and reproductions of it are displayed at the tourist office. The town lives from dairy cattle farming, from the Taurus factory, established since the 1970s, and from trade passing through towards Andorra.
Church of Santa Maria d'Organyà
Monument
Church of Organyà (Alt Urgell, Lleida), a town where the Homilies of Organyà, one of the oldest literary texts written in Catalan, were found. Documented since 993, it was rebuilt and consecrated anew in 1057 after a fire, and in 1090 it became a collegiate church of Augustinian canons. With a basilical plan of three naves and three apses, it retains from the 11th-12th-century Romanesque period the original apse, with blind arcading beneath a sawtooth frieze; the cloister and the doorway are from the 13th century, and the north nave, the roof and the current bell tower from the 17th-18th centuries. In 1904 Dr Joaquim Miret found the Homilies in the parish archive. It has been a parish since 1855 and Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 2006.
Tresponts Gorge
Nature
A gorge through which the river Segre cuts its way between high rock walls, located between the municipalities of Fígols i Alinyà, Ribera d'Urgellet, les Valls d'Aguilar and Organyà, in the Alt Urgell, linking the upper Segre basin with Organyà and the middle Segre. The C-14 road also runs through it. In former times it was crossed by the royal road linking Organyà with la Seu d'Urgell, of which vestiges still survive, some clearly medieval, which crossed the gorge by means of three bridges that give the congost its name: one of wood and two of stone. In the middle of the gorge, the río de Lavansa flows into the Segre, near the remains of the old Benedictine monastery of Sant Andreu de Tresponts.
Homilies of Organyà
Curiosity

Organyà Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Organyà is celebrated in the town where the Homilies d'Organyà, the oldest known literary text in the Catalan language, were found in 1904, next to the spectacular gorge of the Congost de Tresponts.
