What to see and do in Castellar de la Ribera

Castellar de la Ribera
Village
Castellar de la Ribera is a municipality in the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, on the border with the Alt Urgell, between Solsona and Bassella, with 131 inhabitants, which preserves three termenat castles known as Castellar, Ceuró and Pampa. Until the 1916 reform, the municipality was simply called Castellar. Its territory, in the western part of the comarca, occupies a large part of the middle basin of the Ribera Salada, to the north, and of the headwaters of the riera de Madrona, to the south; the terrain descends from east to west, from the 938 metres of the cim de la Torregassa to the 474 metres where the Ribera Salada flows out towards Bassella, while the highest altitude, 1027 metres, is reached at the cim de Serrallonga, to the north.
Castle and Wall of Castellar
Monument
Remains of walls and foundations next to the settlement of Castellar, near the church of Sant Pere, with a cylindrical watchtower; today its layout is hard to make out, and our visual knowledge comes from a drawing by Langlois from 1834. Documented since 1154, its castellans became the leading noble family of the area, first under the counts of Urgell and later under the Cardona family. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castle of Ceuró
Monument
A castle set atop a hill on the ridge of the left bank of the Ribera Salada, beside the 11th-century Romanesque church of Sant Julià de Ceuró, with which it forms a group together with a large house and the rectory, in the municipality of Castellar de la Ribera. Documented in 1188, when a bull of Pope Clement III cites it as property of the church of Santa María de Solsona, it belonged to a Castilian family that in 1215 went on to buy rights over the castle of Altés, and in 1218 held rights over other castles such as Meda, Navès, Oliana or Ogern. It preserves some old battered retaining walls. Much altered, today it cannot be freely visited because it functions as a rural hotel, a gastronomic venue and a nature classroom; it is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Castle of Pampa
Monument
The place of Pampa is already documented in 839 in the deed of consecration of la Seu d'Urgell, but the first direct reference to the castle is from 1227, when Count Ponç d'Urgell ceded it to Bernat de Peramola. Its remains are today mixed with those of the original church of Santa Margarida and those of the manor house, all abandoned since the parish was depopulated in the 1970s. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castellar de la Ribera Main Festival
Activity
Castellar de la Ribera celebrates several festes majors by settlement: that of Sant Pere de Castellar on 15 August, that of el Clarà on the 16th or 19th of August, and the festa major dels Apòstols, one of the most eagerly awaited by the townspeople.
