Fígols i Alinyà
Village
Alinyà is a settlement of the municipality of Fígols i Alinyà, in the comarca of the Alt Urgell, province of Lleida, at 958 metres above sea level; the municipal area, which also brings together the settlements of Fígols, Alsina, les Sorts, Canelles and Barcelona Perles, belonged from 978 to the bishopric of Urgell and from 1130 to the Priory of Organyà, until Alinyà and Fígols d'Organyà merged in 1972. The church of Alinyà, dedicated to Sant Esteve, is documented alongside the village in 1036; Romanesque in style, with a single nave and semicircular apse, a pointed vault and a doorway with graded archivolts, it was consecrated by Bishop Guillem d'Urgell in 1057. During the First Carlist War, a group of liberals sheltering in the neighbouring church of Fígols died in a fire started by Carlist troops.
Church of Sant Esteve d'Alinyà
Monument
A Romanesque church with a single nave and semicircular apse, situated in Fígols i Alinyà (Alt Urgell), documented in 1036 and consecrated by Bishop Guillem d'Urgell in 1057. The masonry of the apse, large and irregular, differs from that of the nave walls, which alternate courses of flat stones with larger ones, an arrangement typical of the pre-Romanesque tradition; the facade, much altered, retains a round-arched doorway with four receding archivolts and a similar window. In the Gothic period the original vault was replaced with a pointed one, and a two-bay bell-gable was added. The apse was restored in 1985, when a sacristy attached to it was removed. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
