What to see and do in Maials

Maials
Village
Maials is a town in the south of the comarca of the Segrià, on lands of olive groves and dry farming, with a municipal area of 57 km² that belonged culturally to Les Garrigues until 1936. Its antiquity would be around 2500 years, judging by the ceramic finds from the pre-Roman settlement of la Costa, which gave rise to the fortified town, situated at a crossroads between the interior of Ponent, the coast and the route towards the Meseta and Zaragoza. Julius Caesar repeatedly cited Maials in his account of the Roman civil war as one of the strategic points of the territory. During the first Carlist War, liberal troops surrounded the forces of Manuel Carnicer in its surroundings, who were defeated in the Action of Maials on 10 April 1834.

Food and drink
In the dry lands of the south of the comarca, on poor soils and with scarce rainfall, a traditional olive grove of low yield is maintained. The local mills make extra virgin oils with cooperative oil presses of short season.
