What to see and do in Riba-roja d'Ebre

Riba-roja d'Ebre
Village
Riba-roja d'Ebre, called Ribarroija until 1916, is a municipality of 1,132 inhabitants on both sides of the Ebro, in the northwest of the Ribera d'Ebre, close to the border with Aragon. In its territory rises the Riba-roja reservoir, whose dam stands upstream of the town at 34 metres high and 662 metres long, forming a reservoir of 38 kilometres and 267 million cubic metres of capacity, with a hydroelectric power station since 1967; its surroundings are an area of natural interest. Surrounded by mountains and gorges, it preserves the Romanesque church of Santa Magdalena, dismantled piece by piece and moved to save it from being submerged under the waters of the reservoir. It has a station on the Zaragoza-Caspe-Barcelona line.
Castle of Riba-roja
Monument
A castle that gives its name to Riba-roja d'Ebre, in the Ribera d'Ebre. In 1169 King Alfonso the Chaste pledged it to the Templar master Arnau de Torroja, and in 1181 he granted it in full ownership to the Order of the Temple, which made it the head of its domain in the area during the struggle against the Saracens. The town grew up around this Templar stronghold, which acted as a defensive outpost. Today only remains of the castle survive, incorporated into the medieval complex that crowns the town.
The Garita (Watch Post)
Monument
La Garita, a structure declared a cultural asset of national interest in the municipality of Riba-roja d'Ebre (Ribera d'Ebre), stands on the camí dels Hereuins, south of the town centre, in a strategic location with wide visual command over the river Ebro. It is a quadrangular building, preserved up to halfway through the first floor, with walls of irregular stone laid in courses and ashlar at the corners; small loopholes open at both levels. Its origins are remote: everything suggests it is a medieval watchtower, which has been used in the various armed conflicts the area has experienced.
Fort on the Serra dels Valencians
Monument
A 19th-20th century fortification of which remains survive of a quadrangular tower with corners cut on the bias, situated on a hill of the serra dels Valencians, south of the hydroelectric power station, in the municipality of Riba-roja d'Ebre. It retains a few loopholes, and its walls are made of stones of various sizes bonded with mortar and laid in irregular courses.
Riba-roja Reservoir
Nature
The Riba-roja reservoir is a dam on the river Ebro created by a barrier in the municipality of Riba-roja d'Ebre, which also extends into the municipalities of la Pobla de Massaluca, Faió and Mequinensa, already in Aragonese territory. Hemmed in between limestone plateaus, it is 38 kilometres long and covers 2,152 hectares, reaching as far as the confluence with the river Segre; its hydroelectric power station has a capacity of 262.8 MW. The surrounding area, with the limestone-marl slopes of the sierras of Berrús and la Fatarella, offers notable landscapes at the confluence of the rivers Matarraña and Ebro, with spectacular gorges. It is one of the unspoilt areas of inland Catalonia, with more than 50 navigable kilometres and fishing rich in native species such as eel, perch and tench.
Riba-roja d'Ebre Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Riba-roja d'Ebre is celebrated in honor of Sant Bartomeu, at the end of August (from the 22nd to the 28th in the 2025 edition), with a week-long program that includes religious events, popular music and activities for all ages next to the Ebro reservoir.
Hermitage of Santa Maria de Berrús
Monument
The hermitage, the only remnant of the old settlement of Berrús, is a small rectangular temple with a flat apse and a double-pitched roof of stone slabs resting on seven pointed diaphragm arches; its only door, round-arched, opens to the west, and a bell-gable tops the façade. In the 13th century Berrús belonged, along with Riba-roja, to the Templar commandery of Ascó, and was under the patronage of the lords of the place, first Templars and later Hospitallers; the documents that mention it date from 1205, 1229, 1263 and 1294. Berrús was a cluster of masos devoted to farming and livestock, like other Templar settlements in the comarca. In 1968, to prevent it from being submerged under the waters of the Riba-roja reservoir, built in 1969, the hermitage was moved stone by stone to its current site.
