What to see and do in Sarroca de Lleida

Sarroca de Lleida
Village
Sarroca de Lleida is a municipality of the comarca of the Segrià, situated at 201 metres above sea level on the left bank of the Vall Major, beneath the ruins of its castle, of which the base and a tower are preserved. The base is of Arab construction, and the rest of the building dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, when the Santcliment family resettled the place; in 1357 King Peter III sold Francesc de Santcliment the complete jurisdiction of the castle. In 1585 the traveller Enrique Cock described it as a castle founded on a crag, in a barren valley of very poor people. In 1618 the Santcliment of Prunera sold the barony of Sarroca to Josep de Castellvell. In 1836 it was occupied by the Carlists. It has 383 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Sarroca
Monument
Sarroca castle gave rise to the town of Sarroca de Lleida (Segrià) and still dominates the village from above, next to the plaça Major of the old quarter. The base is of Arab construction, perhaps reusing older ashlars from a possible Late Roman Empire fortress built at the edge of Roman Ilerda, although most of the surviving building dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. The oldest remains are the base walls and the underground vaults, while the surviving tower, now in ruins, is of Gothic date, with the windows, doors and arrow-slits of that period.
