What to see and do in Torrebesses

Torrebesses
Village
Torrebesses is a municipality in the south of the comarca of the Segrià, in Lleida, with the church of Sant Salvador. Its name is a contraction of torres bessones (twin towers); after 1149 a group of families from the Alt Penedès settled in the municipal area to resettle the territory conquered from the Arabs. The first known feudal lord was Guillem Moliner, and his family dominated the village between 1319 and 1394; in 1319 Bramon Moliner granted a charter of settlement to attract new residents. The power of the Moliner family is reflected in the 1322 tomb of the archdeacon Pere Moliner in the Seu Vella of Lleida. In 1359 King Peter III sold Pere Moliner the jurisdiction of the municipal area, which passed in 1394 to Pere Aicart, who in 1401 agreed with the residents on the use of the water of the Vall Major. It had 294 inhabitants in 2023.
Church of Sant Salvador de Torrebesses
Monument
The church of Sant Salvador de Torrebesses (Segrià, Lleida), of Romanesque origin dated to the second half of the 12th century, is declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It stands on a rocky mound at the northern edge of the village and, together with the Castle-Palace, is the visual landmark of Torrebesses; it was built after a stretch of wall was demolished. It has a single nave with a slightly pointed barrel vault, a semicircular apse and three rectangular chapels of a later period, among them that of Sant Joan Baptista, from the 15th century, with a Gothic ribbed vault and a limestone altarpiece retaining traces of polychromy from the second half of the 14th century, restored in 1989. The 14th-century portal has three archivolts supported on columns with capitals decorated with foliage.
