Almatret
Village
Almatret is a municipality in the Segrià comarca, in the province of Lleida, with 292 inhabitants (INE 2025), resettled in the Middle Ages by the lords of the House of Montcada; in 1302 Guillem d'Entença granted a settlement charter to ten families, and from 1558 the town was under the lordship of the Aitona family. The village is organised around the church of Saint Michael, baroque and from the 18th century, next to the former house of the marquises of Aitona. On the outskirts is the Vila well, attributed to the Saracens, with ten wash-houses around it. It preserves mining remains, especially the Vallcarca mine. A municipality on the Ebro with the Tossals d'Almatret, a spectacular landscape of steppe and crags declared a protected natural area in 1992.
House of the Tower of Almatret
Monument
The Casa de la Torre, also called La Torre or Casa-Torre del Comte, is a fortified house on Plaça Mossèn Cinto in Almatret, in the Segrià (Lleida). Of vernacular architecture, it is linked to the marquisate of Aitona, whose first holder, Francesc de Montcada i de Cardona, died in 1594. It is a house between party walls forming the front of the square, with a ground floor, one upper floor and an attic: on the ground floor a voussoired arch doorway with a coat of arms opens, the first floor has three openings and a small balcony, and in the attic runs a gallery formed by two large segmental-arch openings. The interior has been renovated. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) (code BCIN 809-MH, BIC RI-51-0006229).
Hills of Almatret
Nature
Limestone hills above the Ebro, comprising 917 hectares of protected natural area declared in 1992, a refuge for Bonelli's eagle. The area, lying entirely within the municipal district of Almatret (Segrià), covers the limestone slopes (costers) downstream from the confluence of the Segre with the Ebro, between the Canota ravine, in Mequinensa, and the border with Aragon. It forms part of the Natura 2000 network together with the Riba-roja natural area, and was declared a Site of Community Importance (LIC) in 1997 and a Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA) in 2005. Marked by former mining uses linked to the Mequinensa coal basin, it preserves a landscape of sparse pine woodland with an undergrowth of garric and arçot, and is home to endemic plant species such as Genista biflora and Digitalis obscura, as well as fauna including otters, deer, wild goats and bats.
Dry-farmed almond of the Segrià
Food and drink
The almond shares with the olive and the barley the peripheral dry lands of the comarca, on the hills that fall towards the Ebro. The almond is destined for turróns and confectionery and is gathered at the end of summer on small holdings.
