What to see and do in Llardecans

Llardecans
Village
Llardecans is a town of 444 inhabitants in the southeast of the Segrià, on the Garrigues plateau, where dry farming of olives and almonds predominates. It preserves the old walled enclosure and the castle, next to the deserted Iberian and Arab settlement of Adar, of which the remains of a fortress and a pointed arch survive. The parish church of l'Assumpció, from the 18th century, shows a baroque façade and a neoclassical interior with a high altar dedicated to the Assumption; beside it stands the Vila Closa, with large stone houses from the 18th century. It also holds the Farmàcia Ca l'Apotecari, the oldest in Catalonia after that of Llívia, in operation since 1846. It celebrates its festivals on 15 August and 10 December.
Walled Enclosure and Castle of Llardecans
Monument
Remains of the castle and the old walled precinct of Llardecans (Segrià), built in the 13th century, when the town was resettled late; in 1248 the lordship was granted to the Santcliment family, and in the 18th century it passed to the barony of Maials, in the hands of the Bassecourt family, counts of Santa Clara, until the abolition of lordships in the 19th century. Of the fortress only the eastern wall of a rectangular structure and the start of the northern wall survive, 180 centimetres high, with remains of a barrel vault over an 80-centimetre masonry plinth; barely three stone voussoirs remain, the rest having been plundered. Modern works for water tanks damaged the site. The ensemble is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Iberian Settlement of Adar
Monument
A depopulated village of Iberian origin, known as Adar, in the municipality of Llardecans (Segrià). It preserves the remains of an Arab fortress and a large pointed arch from a later building, dating from the 14th century. In March 2019 a truck destroyed this arch, which was rebuilt between August and October of that same year.
