What to see and do in Seròs

Seròs
Village
Seròs is a municipality of the Segrià, in Lleida, on the right bank of the river Segre in its narrow stretch of the Baix Segre, near the border with Aragon. It has 1,954 inhabitants (INE 2025). The territory has been inhabited since the early Bronze Age, and within its municipal area lie the urnfield necropolises of Roques de Sant Formatge and Pedrós and the settlement with a paleo-Christian and Visigothic church at El Bovalar, one of the most important sites of that period in Catalonia. In the centre stands the baroque parish church of Santa María, from 1745, next to the old palace of the Montcada family. Two kilometres away is the Trinitarian house of Avingaña, 13th-19th centuries, the first of its order on the peninsula. The town belonged to the crown until 1212, when it passed to the Montcada of Aitona.
Palaeochristian Basilica of el Bovalar
Monument
The Bovalar site, in the municipal district of Seròs, brings together the remains of a settlement and a Palaeochristian and Visigothic basilica in use between the 4th and 8th centuries, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The basilica, rectangular in plan, 26 by 12.3 metres, and divided into three naves with columns, was built at the end of the 4th century. Excavated since 1968 following its discovery in 1943, the site has yielded a square baptistery crowned by a dome on columns, a bronze censer with chains, a Coptic vessel for consecrated wine, ten Visigothic trientes of monarchs such as Ergica, Wittiza and Akhila, and abundant pottery. The settlement and the basilica were destroyed by fire after the Muslim invasion, after 713-714.
Tower of els Moros
Monument
Watchtower in the municipal district of Seròs.
Manor-Palace of the Marquises of Aitona
Monument
Renaissance palace-house in Seròs, in the Segrià, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It is a large corner building with a ground floor, first floor and attic, with a complex internal layout; the main staircase stands out, reached through two basket-handle arches. The exterior retains its original appearance despite alterations, with rectangular windows on the ground and first floors and, in the attic, a gallery of somewhat flattened arches; it has two doors, one lintelled and the other with a flattened arch bearing a coat of arms. The building is of squared stone ashlar on the lower part of the wall and brick for the rest. It was originally the residence of the Montcada family, and was later divided into fifteen rental flats.
The end of the Bovalar settlement
Historical milestone
The Visigothic settlement of El Bovalar, beside the Segre in Seròs, was destroyed by fire around the year 713, coinciding with the Muslim conquest. Coins of Áquila II found among the ruins allow the abandonment to be precisely dated.
