What to see and do in la Granadella

La Granadella
Village
La Granadella is a town in Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, situated on a hill at 528 metres altitude, on the border with the province of Tarragona, with 748 inhabitants (INE 2025). In the Middle Ages it was the head of an extensive barony. It lives mainly from olives, almonds and cereals, with a processing industry linked to these crops, and is known for its olive oil. It preserves the castle and the Baroque church of Santa Maria de Gràcia, from the 18th century, nicknamed “the cathedral of Les Garrigues” for its large size, as well as the small hermitage of Sant Antoni. Since 2006 it has been twinned with the French municipality of Pesillà de la Ribera.
Castle of la Granadella
Monument
13th-century Romanesque castle documented since 1181, when Guillem III de Cervera ceded it to Pere Mascarell; the Moliner family dominated it for centuries until in 1359 Pere IV Moliner bought full jurisdiction from the king for 14,000 Barcelona solidi, and in the 17th century it passed to the Gomar family until the abolition of the lordships. The construction of water tanks destroyed much of the building; only remains survive on its west side, with elements cut into the rock from the modern era.
Parish Church of Santa Maria de Gràcia
Monument
Baroque parish church of la Granadella (Garrigues, Lleida), located on the plaza de la Vila and popularly known as «the cathedral of les Garrigues». It is a three-nave building with a dome over the crossing and a square chancel, whose construction began in 1764 at a time of agricultural prosperity. On the exterior, the dome, crowned with pinnacles, and the tall octagonal bell tower at the foot of the right-hand nave stand out. The façade, divided into three sections by pilasters, is topped with a wavy crest reminiscent of Sant Felip Neri in Barcelona, and is reached by a flight of steps up to the doorway, flanked by columns on atlantes. The interior, decorated with baroque altarpieces such as that of Lluís Bonifaç, was lost in 1936. It is an Asset of National Cultural Interest.
