What to see and do in Montoliu de Segarra

Montoliu de Segarra
Village
Montoliu de Segarra is a municipality in the province of Lleida, located at the southern end of the comarca of la Segarra, on the border with la Conca de Barberà, at 689 m of altitude. It was called Montoliu de Cervera until 1984. It has barely 180 inhabitants spread across five settlements: Montoliu itself, Ametlla, Cabestany, Guàrdia Lada and Vilagrasseta. Its coat of arms, approved in 1998, depicts a mountain and an olive tree, canting symbols alluding to the village's name, formed from “mont” and “oliu”.
Castle of Montoliu de Segarra
Monument
Remains of a 13th-century castle in the upper part of the village, which preserves much of its late medieval structures reinforced with early-modern buttresses: a square plan with two large visible pointed arches and the base of a circular tower, though much altered by the construction of a water tank. The municipal district is mentioned in 1077 as Monte Olio; in 1227 it passed to the monastery of Santes Creus, which held the lordship until the 19th century.
Castle of la Guàrdia Lada
Monument
Of the castle, documented since 1059 and listed among the possessions of Ramon Berenguer I in 1076 under the Cervera family, the circular base of a tower survives, 6.25 m in diameter, of early medieval origin (11th century), integrated into a late medieval 15th-century construction. In 1261 it passed to the Order of the Hospital. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castle of l'Ametlla de Segarra
Monument
The castell de l'Ametlla de Segarra was a fortification of the village of l'Ametlla, in the municipality of Montoliu de Segarra, built to secure this end of the county of Barcelona. In 1077 the twin counts Ramon Berenguer II and Berenguer Ramon II enfeoffed it to Ecard Miró, first lord of Solsona, so that he would finish a half-built fortress. His descendants, the Torroja family, held the lordship until 1215, already in the 13th century, when Agnès de Torroja donated it to the Order of the Hospital, which kept it until the 19th century. Only the tower still stands, from the mid-11th century, circular in plan, 250 cm in internal diameter, 285 cm in wall thickness and about 13 metres high, with two of its original three floors. Restored in 2011, it now has a stairway giving access to the terrace, converted into a lookout point.
Olive oil of the Segarra
Food and drink
In the south of the comarca, towards the Conca de Barberà, dry-farmed olive groves of the arbequina variety are maintained on dry stone terraces. The local oil mills make extra virgin oils of short production.
