Guimerà
Village
Guimerà is a municipality in the comarca of l'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, in the valley of the river Corb. It has about 250 inhabitants. The village, nicknamed "el nou de Copes" for the huddle of houses seen from the river, is declared a cultural asset of national interest: it rises at the foot of the castle and the Gothic church, surrounded by a wall of which three of the four original gates survive. The castle, documented since the 11th century, was the centre of a barony and later a county, granted in 1359 to Francesc Alemany and later passed to the Castre-Pinós family and the Dukes of Híjar; it was badly damaged in 1835, during the First Carlist War. It preserves the Gothic church of Santa Maria and the castle's watchtower, amid narrow, steep streets.
Town of Guimerà
Monument
The medieval Gothic ensemble of Guimerà, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Catalonia, situated in the valley of the River Corb. It is known as "el nou de copes" (the nine of cups) for the cluster of houses seen from the river. It preserves a walled perimeter with four original gateways, arcaded streets and covered passageways. The Gothic church of Santa Maria, begun in the 14th century, houses a modernist altarpiece by Josep Maria Jujol; the chapel of Sant Esteve, from the same period, is also preserved. The castle, documented since the 11th century, was the seat of baronial and later comital power, and suffered significant damage during the Carlist siege of 1835. The population has fallen from more than 1,600 inhabitants in the 1880s to around 250 today.
Castle of Guimerà
Monument
A castle of Romanesque origin, from the 11th century, built on bare rock at the boundary between the plateau and the ridge of the Corb valley; it was extended between the 12th and 18th centuries by the Alemany de Cervelló, Castre, Pinós and Híxer families, in successive phases as far as its western end, and it is linked to the Gothic church through the old cemetery. Damaged in 1835 during the siege of Guimerà in the First Carlist War, it preserves walls and a half-ruined round tower, its most characteristic element, which has become the town's most emblematic building. Declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), it passed in 1971 to the Diputación de Lérida and underwent consolidation work between 1973 and 1984.
Medieval Market of Guimerà
Activity
The Mercat Medieval de Guimerà is held in mid-August in this Gothic village in the Urgell county. During the fair, stalls of craftsmen and old trades are set up along the streets of the village, accompanied by some performances.
