Castle of l'Ametlla de Segarra Monument · Montoliu de Segarra, Segarra, Lleida The castell de l'Ametlla de Segarra was a fortification of the village of l'Ametlla, in the municipality of Montoliu de Segarra, built to secure this end of the county of Barcelona. In 1077 the twin counts Ramon Berenguer II and Berenguer Ramon II enfeoffed it to Ecard Miró, first lord of Solsona, so that he would finish a half-built fortress. His descendants, the Torroja family, held the lordship until 1215, already in the 13th century, when Agnès de Torroja donated it to the Order of the Hospital, which kept it until the 19th century. Only the tower still stands, from the mid-11th century, circular in plan, 250 cm in internal diameter, 285 cm in wall thickness and about 13 metres high, with two of its original three floors. Restored in 2011, it now has a stairway giving access to the terrace, converted into a lookout point. Photo: Isidre blanc (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Montoliu de Segarra
