What to see and do in Granyena de Segarra

Granyena de Segarra
Village
Granyena de Segarra is a municipality of 149 inhabitants located in the southwest of the Lleida comarca of la Segarra, whose town centre sits at the foot of the ruins of the Templar castle of Granyena, on the outskirts of which stands the sanctuary of Santa María del Camino. The castle, from the 11th-12th centuries, was ceded around 1131 to the Order of the Temple, the first donation of this kind made by a Count of Barcelona, and the Templars established a permanent community there in 1136, which constituted the order's first building in Catalonia. Today it is almost entirely in ruins, though it preserves a good part of its spaces, including several passageways.
Tower of Granyena de Segarra
Monument
Ruined cylindrical tower, situated on a small hill half a kilometer south of the village, which served as a watchtower and defensive element during the 11th-century reconquest. Local tradition speaks of an underground tunnel that would have connected it to the castle to raise the alarm. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castle of Granyena de Segarra
Monument
Castle documented since 1054, ceded around 1131 by Ramon Berenguer III to the Order of the Temple -the first donation of this kind made by a count of Barcelona-, which established a permanent community there in 1136; after the dissolution of the Templars it passed to the Hospitallers. Today it preserves fragmentary Gothic-style remains.
