What to see and do in Talavera

Talavera
Village
Talavera is a municipality at the southern end of the comarca of la Segarra, in the province of Lleida, made up of a set of attached villages: besides the main settlement, it includes Suró, with barely two inhabitants, and the depopulated hamlets of Montfred and El Bordell. The village of Talavera, head of the municipality, sits on a hillside at 800 metres, crowned by its castle, and preserves an old Jewish quarter, covered streets and the church of Sant Salvador, with a Romanesque doorway. The territory, between 560 and 853 metres, lives off cereal farming, mainly barley and wheat, which replaced much of its vineyards after the phylloxera of the late 19th century, and off poultry, cattle and pig farming. During the 20th century it lost two thirds of its population, a trend that has stabilised in recent decades.

Cereal plains of la Segarra
Nature
The cereal plains of the Segarra are the characteristic landscape of this district of Lleida, where, in the municipal area of Talavera, wide grain fields stretch out dotted with patches of pine, cork oak and oak woodland. The climate, of continental type, with cold winters and warm summers and annual rainfall of between 350 and 450 millimetres, has historically shaped this rain-fed farming, which gives the district its physiognomy of an open, undulating high plateau.
Game cuisine of the Segarra
Food and drink
The dry lands and the riverside woods of the comarca sustain a game cuisine with rabbit, partridge and wild boar, stewed with picada and aromatic herbs. It is the repertoire of the cold months in the restaurants of the small villages.
