What to see and do in la Pobla de Segur

La Pobla de Segur
Village
La Pobla de Segur is a vila in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, in the province of Lleida, divided by the Flamisell river into its two main settlements and situated at the confluence of this river with the Noguera Pallaresa, which makes it the gateway to the Vall Fosca. It is the second most important town in the comarca, with an economy based on trade, services, industry, agriculture and livestock farming. Its origin goes back to Esplugues de Segur, an early medieval settlement documented around 976-978 as Spelunca Sequni, linked to shepherding and vine growing. Around the 11th century a new feudal settlement arose around the Romanesque church of San Miguel, on the Pui de Segur, which eventually prevailed and came to have its own registry office and public notaries.
Fortified Enclosure of la Pobla de Segur
Monument
The fortified precinct of La Pobla de Segur had its first site at the Pui de Segur, near the present settlement. The vila later grew as a vila closa, a walled precinct organised around the market square and a suburb next to the church, of which only scattered remains survive today.
Collegats Gorge
Nature
The Collegats gorge, carved by the Noguera Pallaresa river between the Peracalç and Boumort mountain ranges, straddles the districts of Pallars Jussà and Pallars Sobirà. One of its most distinctive spots is l'Argenteria, whose rock formations are said to have inspired Antoni Gaudí for the façade of La Pedrera. At its southern end, the Barranco del Infierno ravine, the boundary between the two Pallars, flows into the Noguera Pallaresa forming a deep, closed valley, almost a cleft in the rock. Until the mid-19th century there was no passable route through Collegats, and roads between the two Pallars had to go around via Montsor, Montcortès and Peramea. It was then that the Bringuer household, from la Pobla de Segur, obtained permission to open a passage through the gorge.
The Argenteria of Collegats
Curiosity
L'Argenteria de Collegats is a water spring on the rock face of the Collegats gorge that has formed travertines - deposits of calcium carbonate precipitated from the Cretaceous limestones - with distinctive shapes. It is located on the left bank of the Noguera Pallaresa, between Gerri de la Sal and la Pobla de Segur, accessible from kilometre 297.6 of the N-260 road. Both the poet Joan Maragall and the architect Antoni Gaudí drew inspiration from it; indeed, Gaudí used l'Argenteria as a reference for the façade of the Casa Milà (La Pedrera) in Barcelona. The site is especially spectacular in winter, when the water freezes and forms large curtains of ice hanging over the rock.
La Pobla de Segur Main Festival
Activity
La Pobla de Segur, the capital of the Pallars Jussà at the confluence of the Flamisell and the Noguera Pallaresa, celebrates its festa major next to the Congost de Collegats, a gorge whose travertine formations of l'Argenteria inspired Gaudí.

Origin of la Pobla de Segur
Historical milestone
The town's name goes back to the founding charter granted in 1268 by Viscount Pedro de Vilamur, giving the inhabitants of the Ribera de Segur privileges to create a trading centre in the Pallars; hence the term pobla, which denotes precisely a new settlement born from that kind of charter. The place name Segur, according to the philologist Joan Corominas, would derive from the Celtic name Segodunum, applied to the whole comarca. One of the oldest documents from the site, from the late 10th century (dated between 976 and 978), already mentions the spelunca de Sequni, a cave settlement linked to herding and vine-growing, predating the founding of the town.
Railway from Lleida to la Pobla de Segur
Historical milestone
The railway line that follows the Segre and Noguera Pallaresa rivers upstream connects Lleida, Balaguer, Tremp and la Pobla de Segur, linking the Lleida plain with the Pre-Pyrenees; the stretch to Balaguer opened in 1924 and did not reach la Pobla until 1951, after decades of work. Designed to reach France, it stopped there and today is the railway access route to the Lleida Pyrenees. Since 2005 it has been run by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, which also operates, under the Tren dels Llacs tourist brand, bus services connecting to Sort, Esterri d'Àneu and, in summer, the Estany Gento cable car in the Vall Fosca.
