What to see and do in Conca de Dalt

Conca de Dalt
Village
Conca de Dalt is a municipality of Pallars Jussà, in the province of Lleida, formed in 1969 by the merger of four former municipalities, Aramunt, Claverol, Hortoneda and Serradell, and called Pallars Jussà until 1995. Its five termenat castles, among them those of Aramunt and Claverol, bear witness to that fragmented past. It includes twelve villages, with its seat at El Pont de Claverol, and has 438 inhabitants. The municipality, split in two by the Sant Antoni reservoir, stretches between the 500 metres of the reservoir's shore and the 2,076 metres of the Boumort peak, surrounded by the Sant Corneli, Cuberes and Pubill mountain ranges. The economy combines sheep, pig and cattle farming with the growing of cereals, almonds and olives, together with a growing rural tourism.
Castle of Aramunt
Monument
A castle atop a hill to the north-east of the former village of Aramunt, now in Conca de Dalt, Pallars Jussà, known as the Torre dels Moros. Documented since 958, it was the subject of various transactions in the Middle Ages: it marked the northern boundary of the castles of Orcau and Basturs, was sold to Arnau Mir de Tost and later returned to the counts of Pallars, one of whom married Valença, daughter of the lord of Tost. It was the scene of conflicts, such as the 15th-century Catalan civil war. Returned to comital rule, it remained under that jurisdiction, and later marquisal jurisdiction, until the abolition of the lordships in the 19th century. A circular tower survives, about 7 m high and 9.5 m in diameter, built of irregular rubble masonry with lime mortar, from the late 11th or already the 12th century; no remains survive of the rest of the enclosure.
Castle of Claverol
Monument
Castle documented since 973, under counts Ramon IV and V and later Artau I and II of Pallars Sobirà (1094); in the 14th century it passed to the Toralla family and in 1742 to the lawyer Fèlix de Motes, whose family -including the Carlist leader Ermengol de Motes- held it until the 19th century, when it passed by marriage to the Maluquer family. Only a circular tower about 7 m high survives, partially destroyed and under restoration after having served as the village's water tank. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Tower of Perauba
Monument
Romanesque circular tower from around the year 1000, of regular and fairly primitive ashlars, with an interior diameter of 1.70 m and walls 1.2 m thick; it today preserves about 7 m of height, less than the original. It served as a medieval watchtower on the Serra de Palles; the tradition recorded by the writer Pep Coll places a king here, as recalled by the nearby spring of the Font de la Casa del Rei. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castle of Hortoneda
Monument
Romanesque castle of medieval origin of which only the interior fill of its circular tower and a few wall stretches in poor condition survive; it belonged to the Orcau family and later passed to the county of Pallars Jussà, to the dukes of Cardona, and finally to the House of Medinaceli. Today the esplanade holds a municipal water tank. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category) (RI-51-0006424).
Castle of Toralla
Monument
Romanesque frontier castle documented in the 9th-10th centuries with notable activity in the 11th; it preserves a circular tower built directly on the rock, about 8 m in diameter and up to 5 m high, and a stretch of wall of irregular, unworked large stones, today covered in vegetation. In 1057 Count Artau I of Pallars Sobirà included it in his wife's dowry to the counts of Barcelona; a local lineage held it from the 12th century until in 1645 it passed by marriage to a baron of Sentmenat.
Conca de Dalt Main Festival
Activity
Conca de Dalt, a municipality formed by the union of several villages, has no single municipal festa major: the settlement of Torallola celebrates its own on the weekend before 15 August, and that of Sant Martí de Canals on 1 October.
