What to see and do in Salàs de Pallars

Salàs de Pallars
Village
Salàs de Pallars is a vila and municipality in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, situated on the pass between the Conca Deçà, or de Tremp, and the Conca de Dalt. It is one of the few municipalities in the comarca to have remained unchanged over time, without any addition or separation of territory. The walled complex, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, retains stretches of wall, round towers and several gateways: that of Vall to the north, that of Solana to the south, and that of llevant next to the Soldevilla tower, as well as the Capdevila tower to the west, today converted into a dwelling. Among these fortifications is also the Torre del Xut, which gives the vila its medieval character.
Fortified Town of Salàs de Pallars
Monument
13th-14th-century walled town that obtained the title of vila (town) by royal privilege in 1380; it preserves its medieval urban layout perfectly visible, with three surviving gates -Soldevila, del Vall, and de la Solana- and cylindrical towers, among them the magnificent defense tower of Soldevila, today incorporated into private houses. It came to host four annual fairs in the 15th century. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
The Tower of el Xut
Monument
Medieval square-plan tower with a ground floor, two upper floors, and an attic under a single-pitched roof; voussoired round-arched doors on the ground floor and segmental or lintelled windows on the upper floors. Also known as the Torre del Llarí or de Lledós, it survives in excellent condition, though most of its openings are today bricked up. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
August Main Festivals of the Pallars Jussà
Activity
The cycle of August Festes Majors (patron saint festivals) of Pallars Jussà includes the patronal festivals of the small villages of the district, such as Salàs de Pallars. Its main festival is held on 5 August in honour of the Mare de Déu de les Neus (Our Lady of the Snows); there is also a minor festival, the xica, on 16 September or the following Sunday, dedicated to Saint Cyprian, with a bell dance recorded by the folklorist Joan Amades, in which the young men carried bells that were the property of the saint's confraternity.
Livestock fairs of Salàs
Historical milestone
In 1380 Pere III granted Salàs the title of villa and the privilege of an annual fair, extended in 1420 by Alfons the Magnanimous. Its fairs of round-hoofed livestock were among the three largest in the Principality, together with those of Organyà and Verdú.
Xolís of the Pallars
Food and drink
Cured sausage of flattened form, made with lean pork and pork fat and cured in the dryness of the Pyrenean air. Together with the llonganissa and the secallona it forms the core of the traditional charcuterie of the Pallars.
