What to see and do in Abella de la Conca

Abella de la Conca
Village
Abella de la Conca is a mountain municipality in the province of Lleida, in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, situated at 956 metres on the eastern edge of the Tremp basin, which brings together with the main settlement the entities of Bóixols, Carreu, La Rua and La Torra. It comprises the upper valleys of the Abella river and the Rams river, hemmed in between the Boumort and Carreu mountain ranges. Its castle (Castro Abiliense) and the Collum de Abilia are already mentioned in the year 973, on the rock that crowns the village to the north; the Barony of Abella was formally established in the 15th century. The municipality retains Romanesque churches, among them San Esteban and San Miguel in Abella itself and San Vicente in Bóixols. It lives from dry farming and livestock, with 156 inhabitants.
Castle of Abella
Monument
Romanesque ruins from the 11th century atop a hill above the village of Abella de la Conca, in a highly strategic position: easy to defend and difficult to attack, it controlled the passes leading from the Conca Dellà to the Alt Urgell, above all via Bóixols, the same route by which the men of the Count of Urgell entered to dominate the Pallars basin while it was still in Saracen hands. The most important remaining feature is a wall about 13 metres long and 1 metre wide, oriented east to west. Documented as early as 1033 as the boundary of the territory of Llordà, it had as castellans Miró Sunyer d'Abella (1094) and his son Pere; from the 15th century it was the head of its own barony with several castles and settlements. Cultural Asset of National Interest.
