What to see and do in Sarroca de Bellera

Sarroca de Bellera
Village
Sarroca de Bellera is a mountain municipality in the province of Lleida, in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, with 111 inhabitants according to the 2025 register, situated deep in the Pyrenean mountain range at about a thousand metres above sea level, beside the Bellera river, with 7 households recorded in 1381. The village, perched atop a mountain, was formerly the centre of the barony of Bellera, of whose castle scarcely any remains survive, accessible by a path up to the Roca del Castell. Near La Bastida de Bellera lie the ruins of another monastery, San Ginés de Bellera, founded around the year 840, and the Pont del Diable, which linked the monastery with the village. The municipality was created in 1972 from the union of Benés and Sarroca, and retains traces of its former poble clos layout, with the houses closing off the walled precinct around the castle of Bellera.
Castle of Bellera
Monument
11th-century castle, already documented in 904 when it was conquered by Llop ibn Muhàmmad, which gave its name to the barony of Bellera and was the seat of a noble family active in medieval Catalan politics; it even took part in the defense against the French invasion of 1719. It was definitively torn down between the 1960s and 1970s to reuse building material; today only the circular base of a tower 4.6 m in diameter and scattered wall remains survive.
Castellgermà
Monument
Castle ruins next to a small chapel dedicated to the Mare de Déu de Castellgermà, in a settlement depopulated since ancient times; documented between the 14th and 19th centuries, in 1381 it had 3 households (about 15 inhabitants) and belonged to the Erill family until the 19th-century abolition of the lordships. Today only the ruins of the castle and the hermitage survive on the hillside.
Sarroca de Bellera Main Festival
