What to see and do in Senterada

Senterada
Village
Senterada is a mountain municipality of 160 inhabitants in the north of the comarca of Pallars Jussà, between the Alta Ribagorça and the Pallars Sobirà, situated at 729 metres above sea level in the upper valley of the Flamisell river. Its name, that of the village and of the municipality, comes from the Visigothic monastery of Santa Grata, as the philologist Joan Corominas established in detail, through an evolution characteristic of western Catalan. Its parish church, today dedicated to the Mare de Déu de Gràcia, retains an old link with that original dedication. It lives from dry farming — cereals, vines and olive trees — and tourism, and celebrates its festivals on 28 July, for San Víctor, and on 15 August, its main festival.
Church of Senterada
Monument
Parish church of Romanesque origin, located almost in the centre of Senterada, at the foot of the Vall Fosca road. It is documented as the monastery of Santa María de Senterada, founded before the year 814 by Bishop Possidoni of Urgell under royal protection and subject to the Seu d'Urgell; in 1042 it was refounded with a community of canons, and by 1314 only the parish church is mentioned. Despite reforms from different periods, it retains Romanesque features such as the raised apse. Next to it stands the old chapel of Santa Grata, patron of the Visigothic monastery that gave rise to the village, with remains of medieval walls.
Senterada Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Senterada is celebrated next to the parish church of Santa María de Gracia, whose parish maintains an ancient connection with Santa Grata, titular of the Visigothic monastery that once existed in the town.
Paltruc and traidora sausage
Food and drink
Two cooked sausages typical of the Pallars slaughter: the paltruc, of large calibre, and the botifarra traïdora, made with pig's tongue. They are accompanied by the goset, made with blood, and by the carnival farcit with raisins and hard-boiled egg.
