Castelló de Farfanya
Village
Castelló de Farfanya is a municipality of the Noguera comarca, in the province of Lleida, at 358 metres above sea level, west of Balaguer and beside the Farfanya river. Its castle, part of the area's Saracen defensive line, was conquered around 1116 by Viscount Guerau II de Cabrera; James I of Aragon incorporated it into the crown in 1268, it held out as the last Urgellist stronghold in 1413 and was taken by the troops of Felipe de Silva during the Guerra dels Segadors, in 1644. Abandoned in the early 19th century, its remains were added in 2023 to the Lista Roja del patrimonio (a list of heritage sites at risk kept by the association Hispania Nostra). It also preserves the Gothic church of Santa María, the Romanesque church of San Miguel and an old arcaded quarter with Renaissance buildings; it lives from dry and irrigated farming and has 548 inhabitants.

Monument
The castle of Castelló de Farfanya, which gives its name to the municipality, crowns a 386-metre-high promontory overlooking the town, in the comarca of la Noguera. Already occupied in Iberian times, it was an Islamic fortress conquered from the Saracens in 1115-1116 by Viscount Guerau II of Cabrera, with control consolidated around 1130. In 1415 Ferdinand I of Antequera sold the lordship to the Count of Foix, which later passed to the Dukes of Alba, and during the Reapers' War (1640-1652) it went through several warlike episodes; by 1840 it was already in ruins. Today it preserves stretches of a 13-metre-high semicircular Islamic wall, feudal circular towers and the chamber called the Cavalleria, with barrel vaults, as well as adjoining watchtowers.
