What to see and do in Os de Balaguer

Os de Balaguer
Village
Os de Balaguer is a municipality of the Noguera, in the province of Lleida, with 1,088 inhabitants (INE 2025) and 122 km² grouping the settlements of Alberola, Monasterio de las Avellanas, Gerb and the capital, Os de Balaguer. It preserves the Cova dels Vilasos, discovered in 1972 and one of the few protected rock-art sites in Lleida, declared together with other sites a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998 as Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin. The municipality originates from a 9th-century Muslim fortification, conquered in 1116 by Ponce Giraldo de Cabrera, whose castle featured prominently in the wars between the counts of Urgell and the Cabrera family before passing, in 1415, to the knight Joan Vivot. In 1964 Tragó de Noguera was annexed to it, submerged by the Canelles and Santa Ana reservoirs.
Tragó de Noguera
Curiosity
Tragó de Noguera was a Spanish settlement, now depopulated, situated beside the river Noguera Ribagorçana, in what is now the municipality of Os de Balaguer (Lleida, Catalonia). In the mid-19th century it was the seat of a municipality that also included Boix, Blancafort and Alberola, with 198 inhabitants according to Madoz's Dictionary. The municipality disappeared in 1964, when the waters of the Santa Anna reservoir, built between 1962 and 1964, flooded the village; its territory was divided between Os de Balaguer and Ibars de Noguera. Also submerged was the nearby Romanesque bridge of Tragó, already mentioned in a document of 1156 and destroyed earlier by a flood during the Second Carlist War.
Cave of els Vilasos o dels Vilars
Nature
Small rock shelter —11.60 metres wide, 8 deep and about 3.5 high— located in the barranc dels Vilars, in the Os mountain range, in the municipality of Os de Balaguer. It preserves rock art in two areas: the left-hand band, with 29 motifs including quadrupeds, human figures, concentric circles and a doe, and another near the entrance. The styles range from schematic to naturalistic, with colours from black to red and orange, pointing to different periods of execution, generally placed in the Bronze Age (1800-650 BC). It forms part of the World Heritage Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin, near the depopulated village of Tragó de Noguera, incorporated into the municipality in 1964 following the Canelles and Santa Anna reservoirs.
Disappearance of the municipality of Tragó de Noguera
Historical milestone
The Santa Anna reservoir, on the Noguera Ribagorçana, flooded the village of Tragó, which in 1960 still had 496 inhabitants. The municipality was dissolved on 16 July 1964 and its district passed for the most part to Os de Balaguer.
Olive oil of the Noguera
Food and drink
The comarca brings together more than one thousand five hundred hectares of olive groves, with a predominance of the arbequina, verdiell and picual varieties. The local mills, such as that of Os de Balaguer, make greenish oils of intense flavour from an early harvest.
