What to see and do in el Soleràs

El Soleràs
Village
El Soleràs is a dry-farming municipality in the south of the comarca of les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, with 308 inhabitants (INE 2025), which, like the rest of the comarca, steadily lost population throughout the 20th century due to emigration to Lleida and Barcelona. Its name comes from the Latin solarium. Conquered from the Muslims in 1149 by Ramon Berenguer IV, founder of the monastery of Poblet, it came in 1181, together with Els Torms and Juncosa de les Garrigues, to form the Barony of Juncosa, which the abbot of Poblet bought in 1224. It depended parochially on Grañena de les Garrigues until, after several requests from 1736 onward, it obtained its own vicar in 1798. It is a neighbour of El Cogul, known for the cave paintings of the Roca dels Moros.
Church of el Soleràs
Monument
Church of l'Assumpta, built between 1798 and 1804 and consecrated in 1805 in neoclassical style, after years of petitions to the bishopric to become an independent parish; Bishop Torres had described the earlier church as 'extremely dark, damp and indecent', which prompted the townspeople to fund the new construction.
The depopulation of the dry-farming land
Historical milestone
Throughout the twentieth century the villages of the dry farmland of les Garrigues continuously lost population through emigration towards Lleida and Barcelona. The comarca, with 797 square kilometres, today has around 19,000 inhabitants.
