What to see and do in la Palma d'Ebre

La Palma d'Ebre
Village
La Palma d'Ebre is a small municipality in the province of Tarragona, in Catalonia, in the north of the comarca of the Ribera d'Ebre, on the border with the Priorat, at 335 metres of altitude. It has 333 inhabitants. Until the 1916 reform it was called simply La Palma; its history was tied to the barony of Flix, which Barcelona acquired in 1389 to secure river transport and which, after losing it in the war against John II, recovered around 1481 by order of Ferdinand the Catholic. In the village's so-called “castell” the old water tank, built in 1924, is preserved today. In the upper part stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, from the 12th-13th centuries. Near the village grows the Pi de Cal Pino, the largest white pine in Catalonia.
Castle of la Palma d'Ebre
Monument
A castle of medieval origin in la Palma d'Ebre, in the Ribera d'Ebre, documented from a sale made by James I to Arnau de Bosc; in 1318 it passed to the Hospitaller commandery. In 1450 a prison was built there, now located beneath the present town hall, on Major street, as recorded in the municipal archives of Barcelona. The complex was badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War and the bombing of the Battle of the Ebro, and only fragments survive: stretches of wall incorporated into present-day buildings and a leaning tower converted into a water tank. It has been declared a cultural asset of national interest since 8 November 1988, with identifier IPAC 1318.
La Palma d'Ebre Main Festival
Activity
Main festival of la Palma d'Ebre, consecrated to the Virgin and celebrated on 15 August, in a Tarragona town of barely 300 inhabitants located about ten kilometres east of the Ebro river. Its historic centre, of irregular layout with narrow, steep streets, formed around the remains of the castle, the old prison and the Romanesque church of the Virgin of the Rosary, and was later expanded with the construction of the Baroque parish church of the Virgin of the Assumption, from the 18th century. The town retains other festive dates, such as the spring festival dedicated to Saint Catherine, organised between 29 April and 1 May by the town's unmarried young women, called caterines.
Empeltre and arbequina olive oil
Food and drink
The dryland olive groves of the comarca combine the empeltre variety, of sweet and fluid oil, with arbequina. Pressing is concentrated between November and January in cooperative mills that supply the surrounding towns.
