What to see and do in Juncosa

Juncosa
Village
Juncosa, or Juncosa de les Garrigues, is a municipality of 377 inhabitants situated in the south of the comarca of Les Garrigues (Lleida), on the border with the Priorat and the province of Tarragona, on a hill at the foot of the serra de la Llena. Its name recalls the rushes that surrounded this hill when it was settled, around 1194. It preserves remains of the deserted castle of Vall-de-reig, resettled before 1226 and afterwards belonging to the monastery of Poblet. After the decline of the vine due to phylloxera, its economy turned towards olive growing, and today it centres on extra virgin olive oil with the Protected Designation of Origin Les Garrigues, obtained from arbequina olives and produced by the Cooperativa Agrícola Sant Isidre, founded in 1919, whose Oli Les Cabanes oil has received numerous awards.
Castle of Vall-de-reig
Monument
The castle of Vall-de-reig, declared an asset of national cultural interest, stands outside the town of Juncosa, in the mountain range that bears its name, on a crag overlooking the small depopulated valley to which it gives its name; today only a few remains of wall facing survive, largely covered by vegetation. The territory first depended on Castelldans, and in 1152 Guillem de Cervera donated an allod there; there is also record of a settlement charter around 1225. In the 13th century it came to depend on the monastery of Poblet, which acquired ever more of Juncosa's territories until, already in the 14th century, it held all jurisdictional rights over the settlement, repopulated before 1226 and uninhabited since the early 18th century.
Juncosa Main Festival

On both dates various sociocultural activities are held over several days.
