What to see and do in la Bisbal de Montsant

La Bisbal de Montsant
Village
La Bisbal de Montsant, called la Bisbal de Falset between 1858 and 2024, is a municipality of the Priorat situated at 372 metres of altitude, on a rock in the valley of the Montsant river and at the foot of the mountain range of the same name. It belonged to the barony of Cabacés, dependent on the bishopric of Tortosa, and is already mentioned in documents of Ramon Berenguer IV; it was fortified, although no remains of its walls survive. Napoleonic troops burned it in 1811 and in 1849 the Carlist chief Antoni Borges ordered four liberals to be shot. Its parish church, from the 18th century and in neoclassical style with baroque elements, has burned twice, during the War of Independence and at the start of the Civil War. With 214 inhabitants (INE 2025), it lives off olive growing and celebrates its main festival on 8 September.

Food and drink
The arbequina olives of the terraces of the comarca are milled in cooperative oil mills at the foot of the sierra. The oil, fruity and of low acidity, accompanies toast, roasted vegetables and the stews of the dry farmland cuisine.
