What to see and do in Bellaguarda

Bellaguarda
Village
Bellaguarda is a municipality in Les Garrigues with 278 inhabitants, on the border with the province of Tarragona, next to the Montsant range. Its name recalls an Islamic-era watchtower, built on the present-day Carrer Major, from which the plain of Lleida, the Priorat and the Ebro could be seen; oral tradition tells that a guard lived there with a very beautiful woman, from which the place name is said to derive. Between the 18th and 20th centuries it was called la Pobla de la Granadella, and only regained the name Bellaguarda in 1983, except during the Civil War. Its agricultural cooperative, founded in 1921, still sells oil under the Les Trilles brand. The church of Sant Antoni Abat, with a basilical plan and three naves, presides over the square next to an old stone cross.
Church of Bellaguarda
Monument
Church dedicated to Sant Antoni Abat, in neoclassical style, with a basilican plan of three naves separated by composite-order pilasters; its octagonal bell tower rises on a square base. The original Baroque main altarpiece and its paintings were lost during the Civil War.
Kidney-shaped bread
Food and drink
Round loaf of dense crumb and thick crust, with a cleft that gives it the shape from which it takes its name. It is baked in a wood-fired oven and keeps for several days, which made it suitable for the farmsteads far out in the dry farmland.
