What to see and do in els Torms

Els Torms
Village
Els Torms is a small rural municipality of les Garrigues whose economy revolves around olive and almond trees, with two award-winning oil cooperatives and also a production of honey and wine for personal consumption. The Joan Benet i Petit school, opened in 1918, was one of the four pilot schools that the Mancomunitat de Catalunya built in 1916 as a prize for a school essay competition won by its pupils and their teacher; closed in 2012 for lack of pupils, it is the only one of the four still standing. The church of Sant Joan Baptista, with a baroque façade and a sculpted doorway, was built between 1700 and 1714 and has an octagonal bell tower topped with a dome; during the Civil War many of its images were destroyed, and that of the patron saint did not return to the façade until 1995.
