What to see and do in Madremanya

Madremanya
Village
Madremanya is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the Gironès comarca, on the border with the Baix Empordà, with 280 inhabitants (INE 2025) who live from dryland farming and livestock raising. Its old town sits on a small hill and preserves the typical medieval defensive structure, with houses from the 16th to 18th centuries and two of the old gates of the wall, the north and the west ones. It is presided over, without a castle, by the fortified church of Sant Esteve, erected around 1300 on a temple already documented in 1078, of late Romanesque style with Gothic and Renaissance additions; facing it stands a Gothic gateway of the Sagrera. In the municipal term, the castle of Millàs, documented since the 13th century, is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
