What to see and do in La Pera

La Pera
Village
La Pera is a municipality in the interior of the Baix Empordà, in Girona, already mentioned in 982 as a possession of the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, and also formed by the hamlets of Pedrinyà, Púbol and Riuràs. It owes its fame to the castle of Púbol, a Gothic-Renaissance complex with the Gothic church of San Pedro and an altarpiece by Bernat Martorell, where Salvador Dalí and Gala lived and which is now a museum. It also preserves a medieval nucleus of vaulted passages and the churches of San Isidoro, Gothic-Renaissance built over a 10th-century temple, and of San Andrés de Pedrinyà, Romanesque. Its coat of arms, from 1991, displays the castle, two pears —an allusion to the place name— and a cross for San Isidro, patron of the village. It lives on dry farming and has 447 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Púbol (Casa-Museu Castell Gala Dalí)
Monument
A medieval castle (11th century, remodelled in the 14th-16th centuries) that Salvador Dalí bought and restored for his wife Gala; today it is a museum devoted to them both, with Gala's mausoleum in the crypt.
Sant Andreu de Pedrinyà
Monument
Rural Romanesque church in the municipality of La Pera, within the extensive network of Romanesque temples that characterises the Baix Empordà. Its abside preserved 12th-century fresco murals, the work of an anonymous artist conventionally known as the Mestre de Pedrinyà, which in 1935 were removed and transferred to what was then the Diocesan Museum of Girona, today the Museu d'Art de Girona, where they are displayed in an abside that reproduces their original setting. Despite the loss of considerable fragments, it is the best-preserved example of Romanesque painting in the whole region.
Gala and the castle of Púbol
Historical milestone
Salvador Dalí bought the medieval castle of Púbol and remodeled it as a residence for Gala, who only visited it with a written invitation; she died on 10 June 1982 and was buried in the crypt of the castle itself.
