What to see and do in Colomers

Colomers
Village
Colomers is a small agricultural town in the Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, with its medieval castle, now the seat of the town hall, on the plaça de la Vila. With only 4.3 km², it is the smallest municipality in the comarca and is watered by the Ter river. Documented since the 9th century under the Latin name Columbarios, a place where pigeons are bred, whence the pigeon on its coat of arms, it is mentioned in a charter of 844 in which King Charles the Bald confirmed the monastery of Sant Medir's possession of its monastic cell. In excavations of the Romanesque church of Santa María, between 1960 and 1980, a dolium and Roman marble columns were found. In the 15th century Queen Joana Enríquez took refuge for three days in Colomers during the Catalan civil war. It has 208 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Colomers
Monument
The Castell de Colomers is a building in the municipality of Colomers, in the Baix Empordà, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), which today houses the Town Hall. It stands adjoining the apse of the church, on Plaça de la Vila, and is a large, two-storey mansion of irregular plan with a tiled roof; the façade, of almost symmetrical composition, has on the ground floor, raised above the square, a round-arched doorway with large stone voussoirs opening onto a corridor from which the doors of the Casa de la Vila and the Cambra Agrària lead off. The building, known as the castle, occupies in part the site of the former monastic dependencies of the abbots of Amer, lords of the place; its present structure dates from around the 18th century, though it retains Gothic remains from the 15th century.
Sant Llorenç de Colomers
Monument
Romanesque chapel located in the municipal term of Colomers, in the Baix Empordà region, popularly known as Sant Llenç, a contracted form of Sant Llorenç. It stands on the way into the village from the neighbouring town of Verges. Of medieval origin, the building has now been converted into a private home and no longer retains its original religious use.
Santa Maria de Colomers
Monument
Santa Maria de Colomers is a church in the centre of the village of Colomers (Baix Empordà). The earliest references date from the 9th century, when it is mentioned as a cell dependent on the monastery of Sant Medir; in the 10th and 11th centuries it came under the dependency of Santa Maria d'Amer. The abside and the interior capitals, with plant, animal and human figure motifs, date from the 11th century; the vault of the nave was added in the 12th and 13th centuries. Between the 16th and 17th centuries fortification works gave the upper part its arrow-slit appearance, and between the 17th and 18th centuries the side chapels, the sacristy, the baroque portal and the bell tower were added. A restoration from 1970 to 1973 recovered hidden Romanesque structures.
