What to see and do in Garrigoles

Garrigoles
Village
Garrigoles is a small rural municipality in the comarca of Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, located in the north of the comarca, on the border with the Alt Empordà. It includes the hamlets of Garrigoles and les Olives, the municipal seat. It has 182 inhabitants and its economy has been based on dry farming, with cereals, fodder and maize, as well as declining olive groves and the raising of sheep, pigs and cattle. The hamlet of Garrigoles, with some fifty modest buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, is arranged in long, narrow streets around a rectangular square. It preserves the Romanesque church of Sant Sadurní, from the 12th and 13th centuries, and that of Sant Vicenç de les Olives, in late Romanesque style. The summer main feast is celebrated on the last weekend of August.
Sant Sadurní de Garrigoles
Monument
Rural Romanesque church located among the farmhouses that make up the village of Garrigoles, within the extensive network of Romanesque temples of the Baix Empordà. In 1185 it was ceded by Girona to the order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, who established a community here, and in 1210 the place became part of the domains of the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria d'Amer; by the late 14th century it belonged to the barony of Verges. It has a single nave with a vaulted semicircular abside, a portal of three degrading round arches and a two-storey bell-gable, whose upper section is a late addition. On the cornice of the south wall a small figure carved in relief is preserved; the side chapels of the north wall were demolished in the 1970s restoration.
Sant Vicenç de les Olives
Monument
Sant Vicenç de les Olives is a church with Romanesque and Gothic elements located in the municipal term of Garrigoles (Baix Empordà), included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It consists of a single nave with a square head that does not stand out externally from the rest of the building, covered with a pointed vault; a single triumphal arch, also pointed, separates the nave from the presbytery. The west facade preserves a voussoired round-arch portal and an oculus, topped by a three-pilaster bell-gable added at a later period. From the year 1210 the place of les Olives had possessions of the abbey of Santa Maria d'Amer, and by the late 14th century it formed part of the barony of Verges, becoming integrated in the 17th century into the royal bailiwick of the same place.
