What to see and do in Saus, Camallera i Llampaies

Camallera
Village
Camallera is the largest village and capital of the municipality of Saus, Camallera i Llampaies, in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, although a small part of its population entity also belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Vilaür. In the mid-19th century it had 141 inhabitants, according to the dictionary of Pascual Madoz, and was then part of the municipality of Saus. In 2006 the latter changed its name to Saus, Camallera i Llampaies to achieve better identification of the three villages that make it up. Today Camallera has 665 registered inhabitants, set in a gentle landscape of hills between the Empordà plain and the Gironès.
Saus
Village
Saus is one of the villages of the municipality of Saus, Camallera i Llampaies, in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, province of Girona. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the county of Empúries and in 1698 it formed part, as a royal place, of the bailiwick of Verges. In 2006 the former municipality of Saus changed its name to Saus, Camallera i Llampaies, to better identify the three villages that make it up; in 2022 the village had 131 registered inhabitants and its urban centre, 81. It retains the church of Santa Eugènia de Saus, a fortified Romanesque church set atop a small hill overlooking the urban layout, in a very quiet rural setting.
Llampaies
Village
Llampaies is the smallest of the three villages of the municipality of Saus, Camallera i Llampaies, in the Alt Empordà, centred on a small hill overlooking the rest of the buildings. Unlike the other two, which formed part of the Bailiwick of Verges at the end of the seigneurial regime, Llampaies belonged to the Vegueria Estreta of Girona in the early 19th century. In 1846 its territory was incorporated, together with that of Camallera, into the municipality of Saus, which took its current name in 2006 to better identify the three villages. It retains the church of San Martín, of Romanesque origin with a single nave, together with its rectory, and several 16th-century houses, such as Can Gil or the Bòbila de Llampaies. It celebrates a winter patronal festival dedicated to its patron saint. It has 91 inhabitants in the village (2022).
