What to see and do in Foixà

Foixà
Village
Foixà is a small town in the interior of the Baix Empordà, on the right bank of the Ter river, which the writer Josep Pla called «delícia recòndita, pura meravella» («hidden delight, pure marvel»). Documented since 1019, when it belonged to the county of Empúries, it lived through the clashes between the Empordà counts and the Crown of Aragon; in 1396 Count Joan I d'Empúries died while hunting in its forests, a fact recalled by a cross on the path from the castle to the church. The municipality is divided into two nuclei: la Vila, around the 13th-century medieval castle, and l'Església, next to the parish church of Sant Joan, late Gothic from the 16th century. The heritage is completed by the churches of Sant Llorenç de les Arenes, Romanesque, and of Sant Romà and Sant Sebastià de les Arenes, pre-Romanesque. It has 298 inhabitants.
Castle of Foixà
Monument
The castle of Foixà, the origin of the Girona municipality of Foixà (Baix Empordà), was probably built in the second half of the 13th century and was modified in the 16th and, later, in the 18th and 19th centuries. It stands on a hill overlooking almost the entire former county of Ampurias and retains, from its oldest core, a chapel dedicated to Saint Mark, a semicircular tower, an embankment and the wall surrounding the Vila district. It was the centre of the barony held by the Foixà family in fief from the counts of Ampurias since the mid-12th century; the chapel held the Gothic tombs of Bernat Guillem and Guillem de Foixà, today moved to the church of Our Lady of Hope in S'Agaró. It also includes a T-shaped palace, with a lintelled doorway and the coat of arms of the Foixà family, from the 19th century.
Sant Llorenç de les Arenes
Monument
Small Romanesque church located in the settlement of Sant Llorenç de les Arenes, in the municipality of Foixà (Baix Empordà), by the Ter river. The present temple, from the 12th century, replaced the original church of Sant Romà de Sedillà, cited in 1065, whose parishioners moved here before 1313 when its site was buried by sand dunes. It was a commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem from 1225, and by 1414 it was already described as half in ruins; it passed under the authority of Aviñonet and, from 1600, of Aiguaviva and Castellón de Ampurias. In June 2004 seven Romanesque capitals from the 11th and 12th centuries, from the old cloister, were stolen from it; only two were recovered and are now kept in the Diocesan Museum of Gerona.
Sant Romà de les Arenes
Monument
Pre-Romanesque church located at the southern end of the old settlement of Sidillà, in the municipality of Foixà, one of the few visible remains of a settlement of possibly early medieval origin buried by sands fixed by pine trees, near the Ter river; the settlement and its parish are documented between the 12th and 14th centuries as a possession of the bishopric of Gerona. It is a small temple, with a single nave with a transverse arch and a trapezoidal apse, covered by an incipient horseshoe barrel vault, whose doors and windows also preserve that arch. Its dating is disputed: between the 7th and 8th centuries according to Joan Badia i Homs, in the 10th century for Xavier Barral and Eduard Junyent, although in any case it is a building earlier than the Romanesque. It underwent clearance and consolidation works in 1983.
