What to see and do in Vilopriu

Vilopriu
Village
A town on the northern edge of the comarca, with the ruins of its 15th-century castle.
Castle of Vilopriu
Monument
Although the castle-palace preserved today, with its Gothic mullioned windows, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries over major late medieval alterations, excavations carried out between 1978 and 1980 brought to light walls and pottery from the 12th century, pointing to an earlier first castle; the centre of Vilopriu is documented since 1279. Of the complex there survive the south wall, a rectangular tower at the south-east corner and the east wing, today partly the seat of the town hall; on the south façade can be seen two twin Gothic mullioned windows and a doorway with an arch dated 1820. It is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Sant Mateu de Valldavià
Monument
A small Romanesque-style church in Vilopriu (Baix Empordà), part of the comarca's notable body of rural Romanesque architecture.
Sant Pere de Vilopriu
Monument
Parish church of Sant Pere, located in the highest part of Vilopriu, in the Baix Empordà, forming an ensemble with the castle and the wall of the town, and included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It is already documented in the 13th and 14th centuries, although the current building, despite preserving part of the 14th-15th century walls, has a structure that is fundamentally from the 17th-18th centuries. It has a rectangular plan, with a flat apse with rounded corners and a two-pitched tile roof; the exterior is very austere, with a rectangular entrance door preceded by four steps and two gargoyles as the only decorative elements, alongside a circular opening in the centre of the façade.
