Santa Maria de Colomers Monument · Colomers, Baix Empordà, Girona Santa Maria de Colomers is a church in the centre of the village of Colomers (Baix Empordà). The earliest references date from the 9th century, when it is mentioned as a cell dependent on the monastery of Sant Medir; in the 10th and 11th centuries it came under the dependency of Santa Maria d'Amer. The abside and the interior capitals, with plant, animal and human figure motifs, date from the 11th century; the vault of the nave was added in the 12th and 13th centuries. Between the 16th and 17th centuries fortification works gave the upper part its arrow-slit appearance, and between the 17th and 18th centuries the side chapels, the sacristy, the baroque portal and the bell tower were added. A restoration from 1970 to 1973 recovered hidden Romanesque structures. Photo: Josep Maria Viñolas Esteva (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Colomers
