What to see and do in Llinars del Vallès

Llinars del Vallès
Village
Llinars del Vallès is a municipality in the Vallès Oriental, in Barcelona, which stretches from the southern foothills of the Montseny to the Litoral mountain range, with 10,956 inhabitants spread across seven population centres. It preserves the Renaissance castle of Castellnou and the medieval Castell Vell or Castell del Far, both declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), as well as the Torre del Moro or Torrassa, a former watchtower. The earliest settlers left traces such as the dolmen of Pedra Arca, from the Iberian settlement of Turó del Vent, and along the old Roman road that crossed the Vallès, Hannibal passed with his elephants on the way to Rome. The present-day place name Llinars is first documented in the year 919. Its main festival is celebrated around 8 September.
Castellnou de Llinars
Monument
The Castellnou de Llinars, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), stands on a small landscaped hill that overlooks the village of Llinars del Vallès, next to the road from Sant Celoni to Cardedeu. It was built, already in the 16th century, between 1548 and 1558 by Riambau de Santcliment, baron of Llinars, as a residential palace of Renaissance design, replacing the old castle of Far, brought down by the earthquake of 1448. It is a square-plan building about 27 metres to a side, organised around a central courtyard with arcades of Tuscan granite columns. Inside, the noble hall stands out, covered with a coffered ceiling of 234 coffers and a frieze painted with allegorical motifs: the months of the year, the planets, and the theological and cardinal virtues.
Castellvell del Far
Monument
The Castellvell del Far consists of the remains of a medieval castle located in the municipality of Llinars del Vallès, next to the road to Argentona, in the Vallès Oriental. It is documented since the year 982, when Almanzor conquered the stronghold during his campaign against Catalonia; its castellans were vassals of the counts of Barcelona. In the 13th century it passed to the Desfar family and later became a fief of Ramon de Cabrera, in the time of Peter the Great; in the 14th century the Corbera family carried out major extensions. The castle collapsed in an earthquake on 24 May 1448. Today notable walls and moats survive, along with remains of towers, pre-Romanesque and Romanesque chapels, and a medieval cistern. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Great Tower of the Moor
Monument
The Torrassa del Moro, also called Torre del Moro, is a Roman watchtower located at 416 metres above sea level on the Serra del Corredor, in the municipality of Llinars del Vallès (Vallès Oriental), and one of the Vallès's most outstanding archaeological monuments. Declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), it is a circular tower 560 centimetres in diameter and about 12 metres high: the base, of large granite ashlars with a rusticated outer face, is Roman in date and reaches 4.36 metres, while the upper part, up to 8.3 metres, is a later medieval heightening. Recently restored by the town council and the Generalitat, it can be visited on weekends and public holidays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from its lookout point the Vallès plain can be seen.
Wayside Cross of Llinars
Monument
The wayside cross of Llinars, a Gothic work of the 16th century located on the Via Romana, on the outskirts of Llinars del Vallès, stands on a four-step plinth with an octagonal stone shaft. On the knop, decorated with plant motifs at its base, nine fairly worn figures survive, among them the legend of Sant Jordi with the princess and the dragon and several figures with attributes that could be apostles; on the front of the cross the crucifixion appears, and on the back a scene of the Virgin, with trilobed ends, two of them broken. No documentary record of it exists; according to the researcher Gallardo, it would not be a municipal wayside cross but a parish one.
