What to see and do in Cardedeu

Cardedeu
Village
Cardedeu is a town in the Vallès Oriental, in the province of Barcelona, with 19,046 inhabitants and an area of 12.89 km², located in the Catalan pre-coastal depression between the Litoral mountain range and the Montseny massif. The municipality is crossed by the Vallforners stream, a tributary of the Mogent, and its altitude ranges from 155 metres, in the river valley, to 310 metres, near the hermitage of San Hilario. The landscape retains features of the Vallès plain despite urbanisation, with grain crops and livestock farming to the east and a mosaic of fields and Mediterranean woodland to the west. Cardedeu has an industrial fabric of small and medium-sized businesses, as well as garden plant nurseries and grain cultivation, and preserves a notable old quarter with a deep-rooted commercial tradition.
Church of Cardedeu
Monument
The parish church of Cardedeu, dedicated to Santa María, is the town's main temple, in the Vallès Oriental (Barcelona). The existence of a Christian community in Cardedeu is documented for the first time in the 11th century, and the present building, which retains earlier Romanesque elements, was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was deliberately burned in 1873, during the Carlist war, and again in 1939, at the end of the Civil War, being rebuilt after both episodes. Notable features include its square-plan bell tower 27 metres high, a sculpted portal of 1780, a 16th-century baptismal font, and the frescoes by Antoni Vila Arrufat in the chapel of the Sacrament.
Cardedeu Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Cardedeu is celebrated in mid-August (13-17 August in 2025), around the feast of the Assumption on 15 August, with giants, human towers, a "correfoc" fire-run, concerts and theatre.
Museu-Arxiu Tomàs Balvey
Monument
Created in 1965 with the legacy of Tomàs Balvey (1865-1954), the last of a line of apothecaries, it was installed in 1975 in the Casal Daurella. It preserves a pharmacy with furniture from 1812, more than two hundred Empire-style jars and medieval parchments of the town.
Borregos de Cardedeu
Food and drink
Sweet pastry with the shape and texture of toasted bread and a yellowish crumb that is made in the workshops of Cardedeu. It is cut into thin slices and taken with coffee or sweet wine; it is the sweet with a name of its own most identified with the town.
