Cànoves i Samalús
Village
Cànoves i Samalús is a municipality in the Vallès Oriental comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located on the southern slope of the Montseny massif, at 346 metres above sea level and with 3,399 inhabitants. It was born from the administrative union, in the mid-19th century, of the old settlements of Cànoves and Samalús, although it did not adopt its current official name until 1989. In its territory the remains of an Iberian settlement have been found at puig Castell, inhabited between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, and a hoard of forty bronze coins found in 1959. Of the castle of Cànoves only ruins remain; that of Samalús, of possibly medieval origin —with a 1059 reference to Sancto Andreo de Samalucio in the feudal territory of the castle of Montbui—, was rebuilt in the early 20th century.
Castle of Cànoves
Monument
The 12th-century castle of Cànoves gives its name to the municipality of Cànoves i Samalús (Vallès Oriental, Barcelona). Its ruins stand on the left bank of the Vallfornès stream, at 363 meters above sea level, and consist of two naves: the main one, about 19 meters long by 8.20 meters wide, oriented northeast to southwest, preserves in its best-conserved wall three windows finished with segmental arches, while a second nave, 15.5 meters long, extends toward the northwest and may have had a defensive tower attached. The site is documented from the year 1002; in the 13th century the lordship belonged to the Bell-lloc family, and in the 15th century it passed to the Centelles, related to the Carrós. It has been declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 8 November 1988.
Castle of Samalús
Monument
A historic manor house in the municipality of Cànoves i Samalús, in the Vallès Oriental, also known as Can Bori. It originated in the 18th century as the Mas Cavaller, and around 1895 Francesc de Puig and his relatives transformed it, giving it the appearance of a medieval castle in historicist style with neo-Gothic elements. It has a rectangular plan and three floors, the top one crowned with battlements, machicolations and gargoyles, with a pointed-arch portal in the center and a round tower on one side; it also preserves two carved 16th-century windows from the original construction. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
