What to see and do in Sant Esteve de Palautordera

Sant Esteve de Palautordera
Village
Sant Esteve de Palautordera is a municipality in the Montseny, in the Baix Montseny sub-comarca, within the Vallès Oriental, with the Romanesque castle of Montclús. It borders Santa Maria de Palautordera to the south, Fogars de Montclús to the east and Sant Pere de Vilamajor to the west. The castle, built between the 11th and 12th centuries and popularly known as the castle of the Moors, sits on a hill surrounded by cliffs and protected the Roman road that ran from Sant Celoni to the Montseny; remains of an Iberian settlement were found nearby. It consisted of two precincts, one residential and one defensive, with walls and battlements, and has been linked to the Umbert and Cabrera families. Among its well-known residents is the clown Jaume Mateu, Tortell Poltrona.
Castle of Montclús
Monument
The frontier castle of Montclús was the centre of the important barony of the same name, on the foothills of the Montseny, above the plain of Palautordera. Its origin lies between the 11th and 12th centuries, although it did not gain importance until the 13th, when the lords of Sesagudes abandoned the castle of the Montseny to settle here, with jurisdiction over a good part of the neighbouring parishes. In the 14th century it was transformed into a palace, and in 1403 its dependence on the Hospital of Sant Celoni ended when the barony passed to Bernardino de Cabrera, whose descendants still held it in the mid-15th century. The complex preserves two phases: a circular tower with an adjoining hall, built in opus spicatum masonry datable to the 10th century, and an almost square-plan walled enclosure from the late Middle Ages.
Castle of Fluvià
Monument
The Castell de Fluvià, or Casa de Palau, is an old fortified house of Sant Esteve de Palautordera, in the Vallès Oriental, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Documented since 1154 as the property of the Palau family, it was dependent on the castle of Montclús but had charge of the important quadra of Campins. It passed by inheritance to the Blanes, the Torrelles and, from 1425, to the Fluvià, who held it until 1837. On 1 February 1640, during the Guerra dels Segadors, Castilian troops entered the castle and killed several people, among them the lord Antoni de Fluvià-Torrelles, an episode recalled in the song Els Segadors. In the 18th century it became a manor farmhouse and, after years of ruin, was rebuilt in the late 19th century; restored in 1966, it is today a school farm.
