What to see and do in Palau-solità i Plegamans

Palau-solità i Plegamans
Village
Palau-solità i Plegamans is a municipality in Vallès Occidental, in Barcelona, about 32 km from the Catalan capital, with 14,771 inhabitants, the twelfth most populous in the comarca, and home to multinationals such as the textile company Mango. It arose from two old parishes, Palau-solità, documented since 955, and Plegamans, since 962, merged into a single municipality, although there is no record of a joint mayor until 1440. In 1939 it was officially renamed Palau de Plegamans, a name that in 1999 the town council replaced with the historic Palau-solità i Plegamans, following the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. The territory, in the Vallès-Panadès depression, is flat in its central part, with small ranges at its edges, and preserves the castle of Plegamans and the chapel of Santa Magdalena.
Castle of Plegamans
Monument
The Castle of Plegamans crowns, from on high, the lower part of Palau-solità i Plegamans (Vallès Occidental, Barcelona). More than a fortification, it is a large fortified house in the Gothic style of the 14th and 15th centuries, much altered afterward: it preserves in its northeast corner a tower built with river stones joined with lime, the oldest part, from the 11th century. Today it has three floors, roofed with one or two pitches of Arabic tile, and it was last restored in 1995; an old legend speaks of a tunnel connecting it to the Can Cortès farmhouse. The first document mentioning Plegamans, from the cartulary of the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès, dates from the year 965; the castle originated as a watchtower, very exposed to invasions in the Middle Ages.
Chapel of Santa Magdalena
Monument
Chapel of Santa Magdalena, on the Camí de Santa Magdalena, on the right bank of the Riera de Caldes, in the municipality of Palau-solità i Plegamans (Vallès Occidental, Barcelona). It belonged to the Comanda de Palau, a Catalan commandery of the Order of the Temple; after the order's suppression in 1312, its properties passed in 1318 to the Order of the Hospital. In the late 17th century the parishioners dedicated the church to Santa Magdalena. It is a single-nave building with a barrel vault, facing east, 8.70 by 5 metres, with a voussoired round-arched doorway and an oval window in the south wall. After the disentailment of 1836 it passed into private hands and from 1879 ceased to hold worship; today only the half-ruined Mas de Santa Magdalena remains. It is declared a cultural asset of national interest.
Church of Palau-solità i Plegamans
Monument
The parish church of Santa Maria de Palau-solità, in the municipality of Palau-solità i Plegamans (Vallès Occidental), became part of the historic centre in the 12th century. Of Romanesque origin, it has undergone later alterations that have changed much of its original appearance; the bell tower, for example, dates from the 16th century. Inside is preserved a 16th-century Gothic altarpiece attributed to the Master of Artés. The church forms part of the old parish centre, alongside small clusters of houses, the cemetery and a small square.
