What to see and do in Sentmenat

Sentmenat
Village
Municipality of Vallès Occidental, on the border with Vallès Oriental, at 207 meters above sea level, divided between a mountainous area of pine and holm-oak woods and a plain of cultivated fields irrigated by the Riera de Sentmenat. Inhabited since prehistory, as shown by the dolmen of Sierra Caballera and the Iberian settlement of Torre Roja, it was the historic seat of the Marquisate of Sentmenat: the castle of Guanta, built in 1012, was soon replaced by the present castle of Senmanat, whose administration passed in 1380 to Pere VI de Senmanat. The castle of Guanta, documented in 1113 and declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1988, today preserves only two parallel ruined walls. On 14 January 1714, Bourbon troops under the command of the Count of Montemar sacked and burned the village.
Castle of Sentmenat
Monument
The termenat castle of Sentmenat, documented since 1065, gives its name to the municipality of the Vallès Occidental and is declared a cultural asset of national interest. It belonged first to the Montcada lineage and, from the mid-12th century, to the Sentmenat family, its vassals, who in 1380 obtained full lordship of the castle and in 1691 the title of Marquis of Sentmenat. It is a large Gothic building rebuilt on earlier foundations, reached by a stone bridge; its walls, three metres thick, form two rectangular wings joined by a third in a quarter-circle arc around a trapezoidal courtyard. On the main facade the marquisate's coat of arms can be seen carved above the doorway. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the castle was used as a farmhouse, losing its defensive function.
Castle of Guanta
Monument
The castle of Guanta, declared a cultural asset of national interest, stands in ruins in the district of Sentmenat, in the Vallès Occidental. It is documented from 1113, in a document issued by the Montcada family. Today it is practically impossible to determine its original extent: only two parallel walls survive, oriented east to west and about four metres apart, with remains of a transverse wall that once joined them. The masonry, of irregular stones bonded with lime mortar, is laid in rather irregular courses.
